"Same Girl" was released by R&B singers R.Kelly and Usher in 2007. In the song, R. Kelly and Usher talk about a girl they love who turns out to be the same person.
The video to this song 'acts' out the lyrics with the actors being the artists. The video starts off as the song does with R.Kelly and Usher talking about features of their new girlfriends. This verse is shot with the two men on the phone using cuts and a split screen to see them both talking/singing. Along with the two men, the girl is also shown. A distinctive shot is when the screen splits with the girl in the middle and the two men either side. This shot reinforces their conclusion that they're seeing the same girl.
Throughout the video representations of wealth are shown. From big posh houses to flashy cars there isn't a moment where money isn't displayed. During the second verse R.Kelly and Usher are driving in an Aston Martin (which the camera purposely focuses on) quoting what the girl has said to them both. As they play basketball together they connote a scheme to expose this girl of her lies. In this attempt to reveal all, they're shocked to find out that its not the same girl but in fact an identical twin.
This video is very different from Rihanna's 'Take a Bow' in that it is the men are in control of the development of the song and video. The woman is somewhat represented as a commodity in that this video is based upon wealth and possessions. The two men are discussing and debating who she 'belongs' to, which means she maybe seen as a possession.
What i love about this video is the humorous ending which leaves both men looking stupid as they falsely accused the girl. At this point i'd say that the control is now switch to the women as the men have been proved wrong. I'd say that editing is the main aspect to this video that allows it to flow. The cuts are carefully selected to juxtapose the two scenes of the men talking, lip syncing is also a necessary. I will also use different representations that are appropriate to the music and also take in account the effectiveness of editing when juxtaposing scenes.
