Throughout this video there is no fancy graphics or production trickery but simple light painting techniques combined with stop motion. The video starts off in a dark quiet tunnel with bright blue titles flashing in the distance. This then leads to a shot of a river side where a creature walks out with light up eyes. A simple shot of the sun setting over the presumed abandoned warehouse is then shown as the music starts to come in. The camera then follows the creature as he takes a journey through the warehouse.
As this piece of music has no lyrics its down to the images and pace of editing to tell a story. In a more mainstream music video audiences may expect the acting out of the lyrics along with lip syncing, this song is all about instrumental aspects. Rippled is defined as 'form or flow of small waves on the surface' i feel that the music gives a calming feel to the listener that perhaps reflects the movement of water. This video therefore compliments the music in that it is calming and has a flow to it as there is no quick cuts and only slow camera movements are used.
The creature changes its form on its journey from a toy figure to a light drawn picture, i feel this change gives a sense of mystery. As the creature jumps around it leaves drops of light behind that turn into water ripples. This image reinforces the title and the calming mood of the music.
I like the effective use of lighting used in this video as it creates and contrast between light and dark. The darkness allows for the light patterns to really shine and stand out. I feel that the setting also compliments the 'dark' feel as it appears damaged and has lots of places in which the light flashes from.
Overall what i love about this music video is that its unlike the common mainstream videos. I love the fact that there is no lip syncing or acting involved but the creation and journey of an imaginative unknown creature. The instrumental music leaves it upon the viewer to convey a meaning of the images and what it represents. The simple technique of light painting is something me and Abbie could consider using in our own music video.
