Pop Music

After listening to music from many various genres, such as rock, Rn B etc, i believe i can develop many ideas for a video of the pop genre. To develop my understanding of pop music i did some research on it.
Pop music is the abbreviation of popular music. It is a genre of popular music which originated in the 1950s, derives away from rock and roll.
As a genre, pop music is very eclectic that borrows elements from other genres such as dance, Rn B, country etc. However there are distinctive elements that define pop. These elements include short-to-medium length songs, written in a basic format, also the common use of repeated choruses and catchy tunes.
Pure pop music consists of instruments such as using electric guitars, drums and bass. The main goal of pop music is being pleasurable to listen to, and steers away from having too much artistic depth. Pop music is thought of as a genre which is commercially recorded and aims to have a mass audience. A defining characteristic of pop music is that anyone is able to enjoy it as the primary objectives being audience enjoyment and commercial success.

The following characteristics are identified in the pop music genre:
  • To aim at appealing to a general audience, rather than to aim at a particular sub-culture or ideology
  • Emphasises on craftsmanship rather than "artistic" qualities
  • Emphasises on production and use of technology rather than live performance qualities
  • To encourage dancing, or it uses dance beats or rhythms, even attach a distinctive dance routine to the song

From this research i have a better knowledge of what the purpose is of 'pop' music and how distinctive characteristics are associated to this particular genre. This will therefore help me in the production of my music video.
